Class Notes - Integumentry System and Cartilage Flashcards
what are the layers of the dermis
papillary layer
reticular layer
what are the properties of the papillary layer
loose CT
bumps into the epidermis
what are the properties of the reticular layer
- bulk of the dermis
- dense irregular CT
- some elastic fibers found
what are the functions of the hypodermis?
aka - subcutaneous
- attach skin to muscle and bone
- store nutrients
- provide insulation
what are the different types of burns?
1st, 2nd, 3rd
1st degree burns
- involves the top layer of the epidermis only
- redness and swelling, pain
2nd degree burns
- skin blisters
- involves all of the epidermis and some of the dermis
- may involvve all of the dermis
- skin (follicles and glands) regenerate
3rd degree burns
- may extend into deeper tissues and muscles
- biggest issue - H2O loss
- skin grafts
what are the layers of the hair
medulla
cortex
cuticle
how does hair grow?
at the base of follicle, cells in the epithelial root sheath
- move into the hair matrix and divide
- add to the length of a hair strand
what are skin glands
invaginations of the epidermis into the dermis
what are the types of sweat glands
eccrine - watery sweat, most common, stimulated by stress + heat
apocrine - sweat + protein -> waxy oil, in smelly places
what are modifications of the epidermis
nail matrix
nail bed
eponychium
hyponychium
cells of the cartilage are
chondroblasts
chondrocytes
what are chondroblasts
immature cell, not yet surrounded by ECM
