Define social class
Used to describe entire groups of people of similar education, income and occupational background
3 social class
Upper class - extremely wealthy
Middle class - generally employed in professional work, good income
Lower class - majority of population, fewer educational qualifications
How does education shape our social class identity
FS - instructions: leaning about social class, being told you receive free school meals FS - sanction: being rewarded fro acting upper class eg speaking proper INF - imitation of role models: copying people who are in the same social class as your teacher and peers
How does the family shape our social class identity
FS - instructions: taught our to act in our social class FS - sanctions: praised for having the same lifestyle and punished for not keeping some class INF - imitation of role models: copying same sex parents of the same social class
How does the media shape our social class identity
FS - instruction: what job you can get based on your income eg you can become a news anchor if can speak ‘proper’
FS - sanctions: looked down upon by the media based on your accent
INF - imitation of role models: imitate news-anchor and certain group
