Class and religious involvement Flashcards
What organisations are the w/c most likely to join?
W/C - more likely to join sects as they may feel some form of relative deprivation from a church
- run to sects to feel comfort and value, churches can tend to look down on those who are underprivileged as they feel that it does not represent them
- means it is mostly m/c there so cannot relate to any of their experiences
- it is also linked to promoting norms and values that they may not carry out in their everyday lives so feel isolated
e.g in 2012 73% of skilled manual workers said they had never attended a religious service
What organisations are the m/c apart of?
could be either churches, sects or NAMs
Churches - promotes norms and values which may attract them as they are looking to keep up with these values
- would try to want these norms and values in their everyday life and tend to be tradition
Sects
- wallis states that sects can attract the m/c as they may experience psychic deprivation
- feel disillusioned with values of capitalism and feel as if they do not know what they truly believe in
- leads them to turning to sects that offer spiritual fulfilment and enlightenment
NAMs
- may feel as if they are lacking something within their life and NAMs offer spirituality and fulfilement
- have everything already but something is missing or they need something to fill their time
- have more money for NAMs as they are wealthy
Evaluation
- not enough research conducted as religion in the UK is no longer collected
people see religion as a more private matter so the statistics are not accurate - data that is available shows that m/c dominate mainstream religions which is linked with denominations and sects
