What does Ashworth and Farthing argue? (2)
Churchgoing is mainly associated with middle class because they have more time or may habe social desirabilty.
Vulnerable groups like the elderly or sick people were least likely to attend church regularly.
What does Voas and Watt argue? (3)
It is based on geographical location.
m/c live in suburban areas which explains high attendance (bogus baptisms)
Rural areas are more likely to have m/c living there as it is a close knit community.
What does Lawes argue? (2)
Lifelong theists come from semi-skilled and unskilled backgrounds with less qualifications which contrasts with church attendance.
Lifelong atheists are from more privileged backgrounds (existentioal security theory)
What do Ahern and Davey argue?
W/C peopl are distrustful of institutions because it is hierarchal and closely tied to ruling class establishments.
Whay are denominations attractive to the working class?
Offers them lower levels with committment and emphasises hard work warning them against the dangers of drinking and gambling.
What 3 types of deprivation does Glock find and why does it attract people to sects?
Material, spiritual, social.
Material: A sect meets their basic needs of survival.
Spiritual: Offers spiritual fulfillment answering their questions
Social: offers a sense of community and purpose.
Why are cults attractive to middle classe?
Middle class have more money to jin cults and self-improve. They can become spiritual shoppers which creates individualism.
