selection, placement, & indoctrination
recruitment
the process of actively seeking out or attracting applicants for existing positions and should be an ongoing process
educational and credential requirements
if a relationship exists between educational requirements and the success of the job, then consideration should be given to them
reference checks and background screening
-applicants should be examined to see if they are complete and to ascertain that the applicant is qualified
-a strong applicnat=/=excellent performance
-positions should never be offered until information on the applicat has been verified amd references have been checked
pre-employment testing
-used to assess potential employee fit in an organization
-typically only used when testing is directly related to the ability to perform a specific job
-not a stand alone tool, used with interviewing and reference checking
physical exams
-determines if the applicant can meet the requirements for a specific job and provide a record of the physical condition of the applicant
making the selection
when determining the person to hire, the leader must be sure that the same standards are used to evaluate all candidates
final selection should be based on established criteria not personal preferences
finalizing the selection
-follow up with the applicants asap
-candidates not offered a position should be notified, reasons should be applied when appropriate
-applicants offered a position should be informed of benefits in writing, preemployment procedures, requested to confirm acceptance in writing
what is selection
the process of choosing from among applicants the best qualified individuals for a particular job or position
-involves verifying the applicants qualifications, checking work history, and deciding if they are a good match
what is placement
the manager should assign a new employee to a position where the employee will have a reasonable chance for success
proper placement will:
-foster personal & professional growth
-maximize productivity
-provide a motivating climate
-increase chances of meeting organizational goals
what is indoctrination
“induction or orientation”
-seeks to establish favourable employee attitudes toward the organization, unit, and department
-provide the necessary information and education for success in the position
-instill feelings of belonging and acceptance
results of effective indoctrination
higher productivity, fewer rule violations, reduced attraction, and great employee satisfaction
-this will be shown as soon as a person has been selected for a position and continues until they have shown the socially acceptable norms and values of the work group

what is orientation
-aims to make the employee feel a part of the team, provides them with specfic information about their position
-activities are more specific and related to the position within the organization
-educates the new employee about the desired behaviours and actively involves the new employee’s immediate manager
what is socialization
socializing and educating staff for team building in a learning organization is essential
-anticipatory socialization
-role overload
-resocialization
-training and education are important parts of staff development and socialization
