Q

Philipp Jakob Spener

A

Philip Jokob Spener is known to be the father of the Pietist movement, a response to the dogmatism of theologians. Spener founded groups of devotion called “colleges of piety.” He was always in agreement with the church, but his objective was to insist that knowing doctrine is not a substitute for personal faith. His goals were similar to Luther, calling the church to return to the scriptures with a spirit of personal devotion and piety, but he was even closer to Calvin’s views when it came to grace. God justifies and sanctifies, as well as extending grace, which therefore displays a calling for Christian’s to live in pursuit of a holy life.

Q

August Hermann Francke

A

Phillip Jakob Spener’s Piestist Movement was carried on by his greatest follower August Herman Franke, whose teachings were similar, without all the crazy end-times stuff Spener fell into later in life. Through him, Pietism left its mark on the entire Lutheran tradition, and the University of Halle became the center for the training of Protestant missionaries, where Franke taught.

New England Pastor of Puritan descent. Started a revival after preaching a sermon on Psalm 90 about faith. Young people began to get serious about their faith, gathering in small groups to study the Bible and pray together. The revival spreads from the church to the whole town. Everyone cared about what happens after death, and people came in huge waves to Jesus.
Everything came to a halt when one young person committed suicide. Some people went back to their old ways. Edwards writes “religious affections” about what constitutes a true
