Class 17 - Theory of Mind & Executive Function Flashcards
Becoming little liars
In the study of guessing the toy animal all children peaked but the younger children aged 3-5 didnt lie when asked what the animal was where as the 6-7 year olds lied by saying they dont know what it is to cover up their tracks. they will tell white lies.
we are not good at detecting weather kids lie. many different profeesions tried to tel however all tests came back fairly similar.
2-3 year olds will peak and not lie
5 year olds will peak and make up a clumsy lie
mid to late childhood will say they dont know just so they can cover up track or come up with a good excuse.
Theory of mind
theory of mind declining egocentrism
Theory of mind refers to the mental state that the childs perspective is not shared by everyone. ex child might think if he cant see you then you cant see him.
child saw smartie box guessed smarties inside but when she saw it was pencils she said she thought it would be pencils and when asked what another random person would think then she said they would also belive pencils.
18month olds- can hand over food to adult even if it goes against their taste preferance because they understand other ppl have different preferances
4-5 year olds others can hold false beliefs
7 yearold others can hold different interpretations of the same situation.EX some might see bunny some might see duck
Second order theory of mind
Child 10+ can understand somones perspective on somone elses perspective.
increased theory of mind leads to better liars
Second order theory of mind
Child 10+ can understand somones perspective on somone elses perspective.

Executive function
Another cognitive skill that helps children tell lies “air traffic controller of the mind”
- ORGANIZE, prioritize and activate information.
- control and direct our focus of ATTENTION.
- regulate ALERTNESS AND EFFORT towards a task
- managing EMOTION and frustration
- cordinate information in WORKING memory
- regulate behaviour,INHIBIT impules
- monitor progress towards goal, ADAPT when needed
Executive functiong:Working memory, Inhibition, Cognitive flexibility
Working memory-involves controlling info in working memory . take plants to sink wash hands then come back.
Inhibition-control or supress distracting stimuli. simon says have to stop if not says simon says. inhibtion allows children to not make the A not B error
age 3-4 follow some commands but not consistent
age 6-7 succeed at complex executive taks that require inhibition of distracting stimuli
by 16 capacity similar to adults
ex your turn is up get off the bike discontinue fun inhibition will help them not lash out and show aggression
Cognitive flexibility- shifting between mental states, strategies, or taks
playing role based tasks
Dimensional card sort task
cognitive flexibility is bad in kids aged before 5. they will put shapes to shapes but when switch to colors to colors they will ignore the rule even if they know it.
