Q

Explain Harald Hardrada’s claim to the throne in 7 points

A

King Cnut (1016-1035) ruled England, Denmark and Norway, when he died his son Harthacnut inherited the throne, shortly after Harthacnut lost control of Norway to Magnus Olaffson, to avoid war they agreed that when one of them died childless the other would inherit the throne, Harthacnut died childless in 1042 so Magnus claimed Danish and English throne but English throne was inherited by Harthacnut’s half brother Edward, Harald Hardrada’s constant raiding parties along Norwegian coast caused Magnus to offer to rule Norway together with Hardrada due to the pressure, when Magnus died in 1047 he gained full control of Norway and took on Magnus’ claim to England

Q

Identify 3 factors which caused rivalry over the throne

A

Edward did not have a son and the closest thing to one was Edgar but his claim to the throne was weak because Anglo Saxon England needed a warrior king to defend against foreign threats, Edward supposedly promised the throne to both Harold and William, conflict between Harold and Tostig caused Tostig to encourage Harald to fight for the throne

17
Q

Why did conflict between Harold and Tostig cause rivalry over the throne?

A

Harald Hardrada had no major plans to invade England but this changed when Tostig Godwinson convinced him that Harold was very unpopular in England esepecially in the North. This caused Hardrada to believe he had a chance of becoming King thus meaning Harold had another rival
