CLA; Wounds/dressing/precautions Flashcards
Serous drainage
Clear: contains watery plasma
Sanguineous drainage
Bright red blood. Old blood will be brown.
Serosanguineous drainage
Mix of watery serum + RBCs = lighter red or pink
Purulent drainage
Liquified dead tissue, WBCs, bacteria.
Thick consistency, foul odor
Standard precautions apply to what 6 things?
1) blood
2) body fluids; vomit
3) excretions; feces, urine
4) secretions; saliva, semen
5) detached skin
6) mucous membrane
Standard precautions do NOT apply to…
… intact skin or sweat
3 types of wounds include:
1- intentional and unintentional
2- open and closed
3- acute and chronic
Tertiary intention wound
Delayed primary wound closure.
•Left open for several days to allow infection to resolve or fluid to drain
Secondary intention wound
Less approximated edges and forms more scar tissue
Ex:
• burns
• major traumas
• infected/open primary intention wound
• unintentional wounds
Primary intention wound
Well approximated edges
Ex.
• surgical incisions with sutures
• intentional wounds
Dehiscence
Pulling apart
When a primary wound pulls apart it is a secondary intention wound.
Factors that affect wound healing are
Paul Must Decide To Eat Navi’s Mustache
1) pressure
2) maceration
3) Desiccation
4) trauma
5) edema
6) nutrition
7) medication
Desiccation
Dehydrated cells, leading to cell death.
Closed wound healing:
Uses dressing to keep wound moist, increasing healing time
3 layers of surgical dressing: (closed incision)
1- hydrophilic ; collects drainage but does not stick
2- gauze sponge: absorb
3- surgical or abdominal pads (ABDs)
