CLA Pre-developmental Stage Flashcards
Desmond Morris (2008)
First 6 months - babbles will be the same regardless of nationality, parenting etc. Deaf children also make the same sounds
After 6 months - Children become attuned to particular language used around them and babbling will resemble this
Francois Grosjean (1989)
Simultaneous bilingualism - acquisition of two languages at the same time before the age of three at the same pace as a child learning one language
Patricia Kuhl (2011)
At birth, babies are ‘citizens of the worlds’ but by 12 months they become culture bound listeners - less vocal but receptors of the language around them
Patricia Kuhl & Andrew Meltzoff (2016)
Found social interaction is critical in a child language learning journey
Language exposure correlates with a readiness for school
Brookes & Meltzoff (2008)
If a child is skilful in following the eye gaze at 10/11 months, this correlates to increased vocabulary at 2 years old
Some children with autism may have delayed language development due to struggling to make eye contact and interacting
Michael Halliday (1973)
Suggested 7 functions of language use:
Instrumental - Fulfil needs
Regulatory - Influence others
Interactional - Social relationships
Personal - Develop sense of self
Representational - Convey information
Heuristic - Explore knowledge
Imaginative - Play and be imaginative
Jean Aitchison (1997)
Grammar
At 18 months, a child will realise every object, name, etc. has a word or label attached to it and therefore will develop ‘naming insight’.
This is followed by ‘naming explosion’ when a child rapidly develops new vocabulary to fill the gaps in their knowledge
