CLA Post-telegraphic Stage Semantic Development Flashcards
What is over-extension within semantic development?
‘Testing’ a word to see if it is accurate in other scenarios and contexts
What are the two types of over-extension?
Categorical and Analogical
Describe categorical over-extension within semantic development?
A child applies the same word to all items within the same category e.g. may refer to all drinks as ‘milk’ because they’re in the same category
Describe analogical over-extension within semantic development?
A child makes connections between items because they have similar characteristics e.g. may refer to socks, coat, tea-towel as ‘blank’ because of the fabric material
What is under-extension within semantic development?
The use of a word is limited way which does not recognise full meaning e.g. will only refer to drink as ‘milk’ if it is coming out of a bottle, not if it is in a glass
What is mismatch within semantic development?
When a label is applied to an object without a clear link
