Which side won the Battle of Valverde in 1862?
Confederates won. It was the first major battle that far west in the Civil War.
What happened after Valverde?
The Union troops retreated. They went to ABQ and burned down the supply depots. The Confederates were left with nothing to seize for food or supplies on their march north. The Confederate Arizona Territory was formed.
Why did the Confederacy want to capture Ft Union?
They felt if they captured Ft Union, they won NM.

Why did the North win the Battle of Glorieta Pass?
The South thought they would meet the North in a battle in the pass on the same level. The Union volunteers surprised them by scaling down the surrounding 400 ft cliffs and were able to beat them that way. They also managed to overturn their wagon train of supplies.
Why was it so important they turned over the wagon train of supplies at Glorieta Pass?
The Confederates were now forced to retreat without all the supplies in the wagon train.

There were people in NM who owned Native American slaves. They argued the 13th Amendment did not apply to Native Americans, only African Americans.
