Q

Why was the New Mexico territory important strategically (Location) in the Civil War to the Confederacy?

A

It was the bridge between slave states and the west coast, as well as the gold fields in Colorado. They would also control the trade route into Mexico. They would control trade through the Pacific, as well. This would give them international recognition.

What was Sibley’s plan in NM?

A

Go up the Rio Grande to Valverde, then up to Santa Fe and Glorieta Pass. They were going to take Fort Union and all the forts in NM along the way, and take all the gold and silver they could find along the way. He knew where the rich families lived. They wanted control of the Santa Fe Trail.

Q

What were NM Territorial Governor Henry Connelly and Kit Carson’s (CO) volunteers like?

A

They were mostly farmers who just wanted to defend their territory against the Confederates. They were from all over NM and even folks from Colorado. Most of them were not trained for fighting. Some spoke English, some only spoke Spanish. They had no uniforms and many had old guns. They had an advantage because the were toughened by the land and knew it well.
