Harriet Beecher Stowe
-Wrote many books such as “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” to discuss controversial topics such as; slavery, religious reform, and gender roles.

John Brown
-A radical abolitionist who believed in the violent overthrow of slavery.

Dred Scott Case
-A slave, Dred, was brought into a free state and sued for his freedom. Supreme Court ruled that a slave is property and has no rights. Only people who have rights are slave owners. A leading cause of the civil war.
Slavery Compromises and Balance of Power
-All of the slavery compromises were attempts to balance the power in Congress with an even number of slaves and free states.
Election of 1860
-Election of Abraham Lincoln, spark that caused the Civil War.
Secession
- The withdrawal from the U tied States of eleven southern states in 1860 and 186.
- The seceding states formed a confederacy.
Lincoln’s goal during the war
-To preserve the union- not abolish slavery.
