Mercantilism
- Belief that colonies exist to benefit the mother country.
- Take Raw Materials and sell finished products.
French and Indian War
- After the war the British war debt forced them to tax the colonists after years of salutary neglect.
- Lead to hostility and ultimately the American Revolution after 14 years.
Stamp Act
-First tax on colonists. There were several and all were despised. This was a tax on all printed materials.
American Protests
- Most successful was Boycotting.
- Tar and feathering tax collectors- Sons of Liberty formed.
“No taxation without representation”
-Belief that the Parliament could not tax the colonists unless they had the right to vote on their taxes.
Patriot perspective of Boston Massacre
- Innocent church fearing Christians just taking an innocent walk.
- The redcoats are brutal, cold blooded killers just looking for an opportunity to slaughter the colonists.
British Perspective on Boston Massacre
- They were minding their own business guarding the Customs House.
- They were being harassed.
- They were simply defending themselves.
Declaration of Independence
- Written by Thomas Jefferson.
- Explains and justifies why colonists are leaving and forming their own country.
- Written in 4 parts, it is a letter to the King, that explains the rights of people, the role of government and what King George did wrong.
Patriots View of Revolution
- Justified because of the unfair abuses of Parliament and the King.
- Taxes are not illegal, but the right to vote on why and how one is being taxed is a fundamental right of all people.
Loyalists View of Rvolution
- Colonists were created to benefit Britain.
- French and Indian War was fought for colonists and they should help with debt.
- Taxes of colonists low, when compared to British citizens.
Boston Tea Party
-To protect the Tea Act, which lowered the price of British tea, but colonists saw a backhanded way to tax them, they dumped tea into Boston Harbor, angering King George III.
