Everyone knew that slavery was a huge problem in the US that caused a lot of hatred, bitterness, and arguments
Conquering the West: is it gonna be free or slave?
Anything above the line dissecting the US in half is gonna be free
Anything below the line will be slave states
Calmed people down for a little while
Mason Dixon line separated PA and MD

A

Worst fear of a slave owner would be to have their throats slit by their slaves
Rebellion was suicidal
Most successful rebel-killed 48 whites
Plan was to kill the owners, free the slaves, and arm the slaves
No mercy
Virginia
Army of thousands from many dif Southern states caught him, tortured him, and killed him
#1 Story that he rode by a family of white people and just kept going because they weren’t slave owners and they didn’t cause him harm
#2 Murdered a family of slave owners, heard a baby crying upstairs, and ordered his men to murder it

After the war he became the leading Civil Rights spokesperson
Gave speeches, wrote books, South hated him, North loved him

The Compromise of 1850

A

Congress trying to create a law to calm things down and poor water over the fire that is the hatred between the N and S
Does four things in the compromise:
California= Free
New Mexico, Utah, and Texas could be slave states
No more slaves sold in D.C. (you can own them but you can’t sell them)
Fugitive Slave Act passed

A

Top 20 Supreme Court cases in US history
Had abolitionists help
Slave owner would take him around the East coast to states where slavery was illegal
His premise was that he shouldn’t be a slave if there isn’t slavery in the North
Told him he was property and that they didn’t care where he went even if it was a free state
Also told him to never ever use the Supreme Court or any other court because he wasn’t considered a citizen

Wanted to go to Harper’s Ferry to steal guns, free the slaves and then arm the slaves one plantation at a time
Sweep through the South

The Election of 1860

A

Lincoln won the election
Felt sorry for African Americans but wouldn’t invite them to dinner
South states started to secede due to his win
Didn’t want slavery to expand out West
11 states decided to leave and wanted to start their own country called the Confederate States of America
Lincoln said No
Lincoln sent thousands of soldiers down South to link them together again
Strength to say no to the South
If Lincoln hadn’t said no slavery may have lasted till the late 1800s
