What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
Lincoln’s announcement to the states in rebellion that told them that their slaves were to be set free. The military was supposed to enforce the proclamation. Slaves in the border states were not set free.

Why was the Battle of Gettysburg important?
This Union victory was a turning point in the war. The Union defeated the Confederates on Union soil. The Confederacy would never regain the strength that they had prior to this battle. It was the beginning of the end for the Confederacy.
Why was the Battle of Vicksburg important?
The Union gained control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two.
Who was William C. Quantrill?
He was a Confederate guerilla that led an attack on Lawrence.
Who was Jefferson Davis?
President of the Confederacy
Who was Abraham Lincoln?
President of the Union (U.S.)
What was the Lawrence Massacre?
An attack on Lawrence that was led by Quantrill. It resulted in about 200 deaths (men and boys).
Who was Robert E. Lee?
Confederate commander who led the Army of Northern Virginia
Who was Ulysses S. Grant?
Union General who won victories in the West such as Shiloh and Vicksburg. He will later be moved to the East to command Union forces in Virginia.
What was the Gettysburg Address?
Famous speech made by Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of the cemetery at Gettysburg.
