What were the royalists comprised of?
Catholics - most of the gentry
1/2 MPs - Areas supported, North West and Cymru (ish)
Why were they called the Cavaliers?
Fought on horseback and was french for horse “chevalier”
Had long hair and fancy clothes
What did the Parliamentarians comprise of?
Puritan prods, and were more militant MPs
Merchants, and people were from richer areas in the South
Why were they called the Roundheads?
Called them because of their short hair
Nice and simple clothes
What were the strengths of the cavaliers?
Loyalty to the King eg Edmund Verney
Constititutional Royalists eg Edward Hyde
Wealthy supports like Earl of Newcastle and Marquis of Worcester
Had a military edge with experience in cavalry
Support in North West and Cymru
What were the weaknesses of the cavaliers?
Northern support was not as wealthy as the South
Lacked the ability to tax effectively unlike London
Appointment of Principle who was Charles’ nephew who often quarrelled with other leaders
No navy or foreign support
Weaknesses increased during the war
What were the strengths of the roundheads?
Control of London which had good communication and ports
Easy to raise taxes
Military supplies in Wessex
Navy on their side (could control imports)
What were the weaknesses of the royalists?
Controlling London mobs was difficult for some time
Lack of military experience
Able leaders but couldn’t prove themselves
Addressed the issues and created a new model army to defeat the King
Weaknesses declined due to higher morale etc over the duration of the war.
