What happened with Rupert and Newcastle?
Poor relations occurred due to a poorly written letter by Rupert saying to get ready for battle, but they disagreed on tactics - Newcastle wanted to wait
What did this lead to?
Roundheads having a 10k men advantage because Rupert was too impatient
What happened to Rupert during the battle?
He was seperated, his horse died and he had to hide in a bean field
What was the damage caused?
4500 killed
Lost control of York
Newcastle left because he was too embarrassed
Why did the Royalists initially have the advantage?
They had Charles as the undisputed leader and his general would be loyal and experienced men

George Digby and Rupert divided.
What was the New Model Army?
3 Parliamentarian armies merged together - Manchester Essex and Waller
What did the NMA try and stop?
Provincialism - they wanted to stop people from fighting in known areas only because they believed it made you a more experienced soldier
What did the new structure of the army consist of?
10 Cavalry Regiments of 600 each
12 Infantry Regiments of 1200
1 regiment of 1 dragoon (mounted infantry)
Promoted over merit than class
Manchester preferred volunteers than conscripts due to expertise
Influences of religion present like bible study; fasting and prayer meetings etc
They were well disciplined and resembled a modern army
They were paid and were only willing to risk battle if they had the better numbers.
