What were the two sides of the Civil War?
On one side were charles I and his followers and on the other were the men of parliament and there followers.
What were the people who followed the king called?
Royalists
What were the people who followed parliament called?
Parliamentarians
What was Parliament’s relationship with the king?
For many years parliament had worked with the king or queen with making laws, discussing wars and raised taxes.
How did their relationship change?
James I and then his son Charles I began to argue regularly with them.
What did James I and Charles I think about Parliament compared to what Parliament thought about them?
They thought that Parliament was there to serve them… but Parliament thought differently. They thought that the monarch was there to serve his or her country!
What did the arguement end in?
A war
What did the king believe?
He believed he could do as he like because he was the king and it was his divine right because God had appointed him.
What did the king believe parliament thought?
That parliament could control him by keeping him short of money.
What had parliament been doing for years?
They had been helping kings and queens for years because running england is a difficult job.
What had happened once when parliament refused to give the king money?
He sent them home for eleven years and ruled without them.
Why did he ask parlaiment back?
Because a scottish army had invaded and he needed money for a army
What did rich lords believe?
That if Charles needs money, Parliament must get it for him. He is their king and God has put him on the throne. Parliament must allow a king to act like a king but they dont give him enough money .
Whag did parliament once do?
They once ordered the execution of two of Charles’ personal advisors.
What was going on with puritans at the time?
There was more of them than ever and, there pure way of worship was becoming popular and many of them were members of parliament.
