Equal Protection of Laws

The right to vote in elections

Taxes levied on voting, used by southern states to prevent poor Black people from voting — prohibited later
White primary
Primary elections that excluded Black people, declared unconstitutional
Voting Rights Act of 1965
A law intended to increase voting access and suffrage for Black people
Civil Rights Act of 1964
A law that prohibits discrimination of all kinds, based on sex, race, color, religion, or national origin
Equal Rights Amendment
Unpassed amendment clarifying that the United States government cannot abridge rights/equality based on sex
Title IV
A section of the Civil Rights act that authorized U.S. education to provide aid for underfunded black schools — indirectly calls for desegregation
Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990
A law requiring employers/public facilities to make accommodations for people with disabilities
Affirmative Action
Policy made in hopes of increasing employment and school enrollment for marginalized people
