Civil liberties
Fundamental individual freedoms such as freedoms of speech, religion and associations in the bill of rights intended to give individuals freedom from govt authority
Civil rights
Are additional protections to ensure groups of citizens are not discriminated against. Many of these come from ‘equal protection’ clause from the 14th amendment- was originally for enslaved people but the Supreme Court have used it in brown v board and roe v wade
How are civil rights/liberties protected
Constitution - bill of rights
13th - abolition of slavery
14th- former enslaved ppl granted full citizenship
15th- men of all races the right to vote
19th- women the right to vote
24th-Americans the right to vote without needing to pay tax
Equal rights amendment
Women are not mentioned in the constitution- this amendment was never ratified - it was make it illegal to discriminate on the grounds of sex
Pressure groups and social movements supporting rights
The right to form a pg in itself is an important civil liberty - part of freedom of speech and assembly in 1st amendment
Liberal groups have worked for rights of African Americans, immigrants, lgbtq and women
Conservative groups have campaigned for religious rights, rights of the unborn and pro gun rights
