A

The watts riot was a major riot in Los Angeles. It was a race riot about the living conditions of black people.
It involved 30,000 people

The Kerner Report stated that racism was embedded in America society.
The Kerner Commission declared white racism—not black anger
it was ignored by president Nixon.

Caused many riots and people started to forget about non violent peaceful protests

Progress of Civil Rights by 1975

A

NIXON: seemed to be pro-civil rightsin the 1950’s
Didn’t take the Kerner Report seriously
Delt harshly with extreme groups

EDUCATION : Progress in integration-By 1975 only 8% of black student still went to a segregated school

EMPLOYMENT AND BUSINESS: Eforced equality in employment. 300,000 federal contacts now employed more black Americans

POLITICS: 1973- 200 black Americans elected to state legislators. Increasing black voters in the South

POVERTY: Suggest that federal anti-poverty measures raised the living standards for black Americans
1960= 50% living below the poverty line
1974= 30% living below the poverty line
