what is a resident
a person who lives in a place for a minimum period of time
what is law of blood, and law of soil?
law of blood: being a citizen because you’re parents are a citizen; law of soil: being a citizen because you were born on US grounds
what are the steps of naturalization
18 years of age, permanent resident, lived in the US five years prior, be of “good character”, must pass an american history and government test, swear and oath of loyalty (always last)

what’s the difference between an obligation, and responsibility
obligation:something you MUST do as a citizen;Responsibility:something you SHOULD do as a citizen
what are some examples of responsibilities and obligations
Obligations: taxes, jury duty, defending the nation/(selective service);Responsibilities:volunteering, voting, being informed and educated, respecting opinions/beliefs of others, attending civics meetings, returning the shopping carts
what’s the purpose of naturalization
to allow immigrant to become a citizen through LEGAL means, and allow individuals with skills and talents to contribute to the american society
what happens if obligations are not followed
punishment (jail), government cannot maintain order or perform services
what happens if responsibilities are not followed
common good/benefits to the community are promoted, and can become the responsibilities of tax payers
