What levels does cohesion include?
Disengaged: families struggle with commitment and attachment
Connected: Time apart is more important, but still family time exists, some family decisions, few shared interests.
Cohesive: Time together is important. Togetherness is an emphasis. “shared friends”
Enmeshed: total loyalty demanded
Little private space
Little outside contact
What levels does flexibility include?
Rigid: One person is in charge (either father or mother)
Highly controlling environment
roles strictly defined
Structured: Democratic leadership
Some discussion with children
Few rule changes, rules enforced
Flexible: Egalitarian leadership (shared leadership, equal)
Shared rules
Rules change - age appropriate
Chaotic: Limited or no leadership
Decisions are impulsive
Roles shift person to person
