Circulatory System : Blood Vessels Flashcards
What’s the role of the Artery?
To carry oxygenated blood away from heart to organs.
What’s the role of the Veins?
To carry Deoxygenated blood back to the heart from the organs.
What’s the role of the Capillary?
Joins the arteries + veins together.
What are the key features of Arteries?
(4 features)
- Thick Muscle
- Elastic Wall
- Hollow Inside
- Small Lumen
What does the small lumen in the Artery create?
High pressure blood
What’s an example of an Artery?
Aorta (18mm)
What are the key features of Veins?
(4 features)
- Moves slowly
- Veins contains valves
- Thin Muscle + Elastic Wall
- Large Lumen
Why do Veins have valves?
To combat gravity as blood need to flow up but gravity pushes down.
What does large lumen in the Veins create?
Low pressure
What’s an example of a Vein?
Vena Cava (30mm)
What are the key features of Capillaries?
(2 features)
- Tiny blood cells
- Very thin walls
How big are the Capillaries?
1cell thick
Where can capillaries be found?
Alveoli
Can you stretch Capillaries and Veins?
Yes
How good were veins at stretching?
Poor
How good were arteries at stretching?
Good
How good were veins at holding mass?
Poor
How good were arteries at holding mass?
Good
Why are veins so bad at stretching and holding mass?
Due to their thin muscle and elastic wall
Why are arteries so good at stretching and holding mass?
Due to their thick muscle and elastic wall.
They could also recoil to their original shape.
