Circulatory System : Blood Flashcards
What makes up blood?
Red Blood Cells
White Blood Cells
Platelets
Plasma
What’s the role of the Red Blood Cell?
Transport Oxygen around the body
What are the main features of the Red Blood Cell?
Biconcave Disc = Larger SA
No Nucleus – loose to be able to store more oxygen
What part of the Red Blood Cell takes in the Oxygen?
Haemoglobin
What’s a consequence of a lack of Red Blood Cells?
Anaemia - tiredness, body is fatigued as the muscles can’t aerobically respire: Less RBC
What’s the role of the White Blood Cell?
Fight off foreign Infections
What’s the role of the Phaygocytes produced by the WBC?
It engulfs the Bacteria/Foreign infections (pathogens) digesting them
What’s the role of the Lymphocytes produced by the WBC?
Produce/release antibodies and antitoxins to neutralise pathogens.
What are Platelets made of?
Cell fragments
What’s the role of platelets?
Clot the blood forming a scab
What is Plasma made of?
Mostly water
What does the Plasma carry (give 4 things)?
Glucose, amino acids, Glycerol, fatty acids, Urea, hormones, heat, CO2; proteins
