Circulatory System Flashcards
Describe Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart
Name the 3 blood vessels
- Arteries
- Capillaries
- Veins
Describe capillaries
The finest blood vessels and reach nearly every cell in the body. Walls are only one cell thick allowing materials to dissolve through them. Materials needed by the cells pass out of the capillary and wastes are carried in the capillary to the heart
Describe veins
Carry blood back to the heart. Do not need thick muscular walls like arteries do.b
How many chambers does the heart have?
4
Describe the chambers on the heart
- 2 chambers collect blood
- 2 chambers pump blood away from the body
What’s the special muscle called that the heart is made of?
Cardiac muscle
Why does the heart not get tired
Because they cardiac muscle contains lots of mitochondria
Why is the left side of the heart larger than the right
Because the left side has to pump oxygenated blood around the whole body while the right side only has to pump the deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What is blood
The only organ that exists as a liquid. Blood carries oxygen, nutrients and water to cells and carries carbon dioxide and other wastes away from cells
The four different types of blood cells
- Red blood cells
- Platelets
- White blood cells
- Plasma
The job of a red blood cell
To carry oxygen around the body
White blood cells job
are bigger than red blood cells and less of them. Are part of the immune system that helps fight disease
The define platelets
Help clot blood which stops blood From excessively bleeding
Define plasma
90% water 10% dissolved nutrients and waste. Red blood cells, white blood cells an platelets are suspended in plasma
