Cells Flashcards
What is Mitochondria
Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, which releases energy
Key difference between plant cells and animals cells
Plant cell: - Cell wall - Chloroplast - Bright green from chloroplast Animal cell: - Strong definded nucleus from outside of cell - No cell wall
What is the nucleus
Controls the cell, the chemical reactions, how the cell develops and how it reproduces
Cell membrane
The ‘skin’ that holds the cell together. It controls what comes into and leaves the cell.
What is cytoplasm
A watery, jelly-like mixture that contains many smaller parts where the work of the cell takes place.
What is the vacuole
There may be several very small vacuoles in an animal cell. They may contain wastes or chemicals that are being moved around the cell.
Vacuole in plant cells
The vacuole in plant cells is large and occupies most of the cell. It is filled with sap and stores water, wastes and nutrients. When it is full the vacuole pushes against the cell wall and helps to keep the plant rigid.
What is chloroplast
Plants make their own food from water and carbon dioxide, using embers from the sun. Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts, which are found in the green parts of plants.
Cell wall
Plants do not have a skeleton like you, so they need something else to keep them upright and to keep their shape. This is the function of the cell wall, which lies outside the cell membrane.
Multicellular organisms
Are made up of millions and millions of cells. Each have there own specialised jobs.
Unicellular organisms
One single cell. Example: bacteria
Specialised animal cells
- muscle cells
- nerve cells
- blood cells
- fat cells
Specialised plant cells
- guard cells
- conducting cells
- root cells
- structural cells
- photosynthetic cells
Tissue
Cells that perform the same function are not scattered throughout the body; they are grouped together to form tissues.
Organs
The next level of organisation is into organs. An organ is a structure that contains at least two different types of tissue that work together to complete a task.
