Circulatory System Flashcards
The heart role
- Contract pump blood
- Relax fill up with blood
The heart
Muscular pump
Superior –Atria –receiving chambers
Inferior –Ventricles –pumping chambers
Left side –Oxygenated
Right side - Deoxygenated
Valves
Allow blood to flow in one direction only
Valves are between the atria and ventricles
Bi cuspid (mitral)
Tri cuspid valves
Pulmonary & Aortic valves
Systolic blood pressure
The pressure in the arteries when the left ventricle contracts and forces blood out of the heart.
Diastolic blood pressure
The pressure in the arteries when the left ventricle relaxes refills and therefore blood flow drops
Haemoglobin
Why do endurance athletes want to increase haemoglobin levels?
To increase the blood’s ability to carry oxygen
This enables more O2 to be available to resynthesise ATP
This allows the athlete to run faster for longer
