Circulatory System Flashcards

Test your understanding of how the body distributes oxygen and nutrients to cells around the body and removes waste such as carbon dioxide. This is an activity delivered by our Circulatory System also known as the Cardiovascular System.

1
Q

What is the main function of the Circulatory System?

A

To supply oxygenated blood around the body and remove deoxygenated blood and waste products (e.g. carbon dioxide)

Q

What does blood do?

A

It carries and distributes oxygen, nutrients, antibodies, heat and hormones throughout the body.

It also collects waste products such as carbon dioxide.

9
Q

What is Plasma and it’s role in blood?

A

It is 90% water and supplies water and regulates the body’s temperature by carrying heat round the body.

It also carries dissolved substances for storage and use around the body e.g. glucose and vitamins.

Q

What is the formal name for red blood cells and what do they do?

A

Erythrocytes carry oxygen needed for cells to product energy. They make of 40% of the bloods volume.

Q

What is the main protein in red blood cells?

A

The main protein is haemoglobin, which allows oxygen to be collected in the lungs by binding molecules to them. It does the same when collected carbon dioxide for removal.

Q

What is the formal name for White Blood cells and what do they do for the body?

A

Leucocytes look for bacteria; there are 5 types of cells. They protect against viral infections and produce antibodies.

Q

What is the formal name for Platelets and what is their function?

A

Thrombocytes enable blood clotting to take place. When they are exposed to the air a protein is released to enable a blood clot to form.

16
Q

What is the protein released when platelets comes into contact with the air?

A

Fibrinogen.

17
Q

When can a blood clot be dangerous

A

If it forms inside a blood vessel and blocks the flow of blood.

18
Q

What does blood flow through?

A

Blood Vessels

19
Q

Describe the different types of blood vessels?

A

Arteries - largest vessel carrying oxygenated blood throughout the body. Largest artery is the Aorta, which originates in the heart.

Veins - carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart; valves are used to avoid the blood from goings backwards. The largest vein is the Vena Cava which leads into the heart.

Capillaries - transport blood from arteries to veins.

20
Q

What are the two pathways blood vessels flow along?

A

Pulmonary and Systemic
