Cells & Tissues Flashcards
To understand the human body, make sure to refresh on the simplest unit in our body (cells) and how they group to form tissues.
What is a cell?
It is the smallest structure able to carry out a living process
What are cells made of?
Molecules
What is a tissue made up from?
A collection of cells of the same type
What is the outer layer of the cell called?
Cell Membrane
What does the Cell Membrane do?
It protects the Cell and allows for substances to pass through
What is a Nucleus?
It is the centre point of a cell, which contains genes and controls the cell.
What is the fluid called within a Cell?
Cytoplasm
What does the Cytoplasm do?
It holds the organelles of the Cell e.g. Chloroplasts.
What are the different types of Tissue (CMEN)?
Connective
Muscles
Epithelial
Nervous
What is an Organ comprised of?
A collection of different forms of Tissue (at least 2) to carry out a specific function
What does a collection of organs make?
A System
What is the shape of cells?
Squamous (Single layer of flattened cells e.g. lining of lungs and capillaries)
Cuboidal (Single layer of cube-shaped cells e.g. walls of the Kidney tubules and covers the ovaries)
Columnar (Single layer of column-like cells e.g. lines the digestive tract)
What does Connective Tissue do?
It binds body tissue together and provides support and protection
What are the two elements of Connective Tissue?
Ground Substance (mostly water with some protein and molecules).
Fibres (produced by the cells)
What are the different types of Connective Tissue fibres? (CER)
Collagen
Elastic
Reticular
