Circulation: The heart and blood vessels Flashcards
Cardiovascular System
Consists of heart and blood vessels
Rapidly transports blood to every cell in the body
Heart
Muscular pump that generates pressure for pumping blood
Blood Vessels
Blood transport tubes of varying diameter
Arteries
Receive blood from the heart (large diameter vessels)
Carries blood away from heart at high blood pressure
Arterioles
Blood transport tubes of varying diameter
Blood vessels that connects arteries with capillaries
Capillaries
Narrowest blood vessels-fluid diffuse in and out at cell level.
Functions in exchange of substances between blood and extracellular fluid
Venules
Receives blood from capillaries; the smallest diameter vessel in venous system
Veins
Transport blood back to heart
Large diameter vessel
Blood Circulation
Essential for maintaining homeostasis
Brings oxygen and nutrients to body cells
Carries away metabolic wastes
Blood picks up and delivers a diverse array of substances from different systems
-Digestive
-Urinary
-Respiratory
Myocardium
Cardiac muscle tissues of the heart wall
Myo=muscle cardiac= heart –> cardiac muscle
Pericardium
Tough fibrous sac that surrounds and protects the heart
Endocardium
Smooth lining inside heart chambers
Endo= inside cardia=heart= –>inside heart
