Circular Motion and SHM Flashcards
A mass spinning horizontally is released. What’s it’s path?
A parabola in a vertical plane
Angular velocity is the same
For any two points with the same time period
A particle goes in a circle radius r with centripetal acceleration a. What is the time taken for 10 rotations?
20pirootr/a
Newton’s law of gravitation
There is an attractive force between point masses, proportional to the product of the masses and inversely proportional to their separation squared
What is Simple Harmonic Motion?
an oscillation where the acceleration of the object is directly proportional to its displacement, directed towards equilibrium
As object passes midpoint, what is PE?
0
As object is at maximum, what is PE?
maximum
How to get from displacement to velocity to acceleration?
Differentiate the trig function with respect to t.
How to reduce uncertainty in SHM experiment?
Use a longer spring, as amplitude is larger,
What is damping?
When an external force acts on an oscillator, reducing the amplitude, causing the system to lose energy.
Free oscillator
Oscillator in motion with no external periodic force acting on it.
Forced oscillator
Oscillator in motion with a periodic driving force acting on it
What is light damping and what does graph look like?
Time period almost unchanged, amplitude gradually decreasing, sinusoidial, small damping force
What is heavy damping and what does graph look like?
no oscillatory motion, gradually back to equilibrium, large damping force
What is critical damping and what does graph look like?
Amplitude drops to zero in minimum time, smallest amount of damping required for no oscillatory motion
