Chromosomes And Mitosis Flashcards
Where are chromosomes found
Nucleus
What do chromosome contain
Genes
What are chromosomes made of
Dna molecules
What do genes control
Development of different characteristics. E.g: hair colour
Why do cells have two copies of each chromosome
One from mother one from father
How many pairs of chromosomes does a human cell have
23
What is the stage called when the cell divides
Mitosis
What is mitosis used for
To grow and replicate cells that have been damaged
What happens in the first stage of the cell cycle
Growth and Dna replication
The cell grows and increases the amount of subcellular structures such as mitochondria and ribosomes
The cell then duplicates the dna, so there’s one copy for each new cell
The Dna is copied and forms X shaped chromosomes.
Each arm is an exact copy of the other.
What happens in the second stage of the cell cycle
Mitosis
Chromosomes line up at the centre
Cell fibres pull them apart. The two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell
Membranes form around each of the sets of chromosomes. These become the nuclei of the two new cells-the nucleus has divided
Lastly the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide
What are the products of the cell cycle
2 identical daughter cells with the same Dna
The dna is identical to the parent cell
