Chromosomes and Hormones Flashcards
What are the female chromosomes?
XX
What are the male chromosomes?
XY
how many chromosomes do humans have and which pair is the sex chromosomes?
23 pairs
23rd chromosome is the sex chromosome
describe how hormones effect gender development
predominately at puberty when secondary sexual characteristics develop
what are male hormones called?
androgens eg. testosterone
where is testosterone found and what is it associated with?
in male testes and is associated with aggression
what does oestrogen predominately influence?
menstrual cycle and reproductive system in females
what is the hormone oxytocin responsible for?
causes contraction of the uterus during labour and stimulates lactation. reduces cortisol the stress hormone
Explain the supporting evidence for testosterone (AO3)
Wang et al: male hypogonadal caused by male testes failing to produce normal level of testosterone. She gave the men testosterone therapy for 180 days. Libido, mood and muscle strength increased. Testosterone powerful influence.
Explain the counterpoint of Wang’s research (AO3)
O’Connor et al: double blind trial, increased testosterone levels in young men. No significant increase in sex/ differences in sex, and aggression or anger. Challenges role of testosterone.
Explain one limitation of chromosomes and hormones. (AO3)
Hofstede et al: gender roles are a consequence of social factors not biological. Individualist cultures show more masculine traits and value them more eg. UK and US.
