Define androgyny
A personality type characterised by a balance of masculinity and femininity traits attitudes or behaviours.
What does the BSRI stand for?
Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI)
What was the BSRI the first attempt at?
First attempt to systematically measure androgyny
What is the BSRI made up of?
20 masculine characteristics, 20 feminine characteristics and 20 neutral characteristics
What did participants have to do using the BSRI?
Rate themselves on a 7 point scale of how they identify with the statement.
From the scores on the BSRI what can be said?
Either masculine, feminine, androgynous or undifferentiated
One limitation of the BSRI? (AO3)
Self awareness
People may not have insight into degree of masculinity or femininity (their own)
So using questionnaires may not be true representation of their gender (subjective)
(BSRI is not scientific or objective)
Is the BSRI regarded as being valid? (AO3)
Yes + reliable.
As 50 female and 50 men rated 200 traits in how much they represent masculine and feminine.
Piloted on 1000 students and corresponded with PPS own gender identity (Valid)
Test retest reliability when repeated
Describe one other strength of the BSRI (AO3)
Quantitive approach
Used for research purposes when necessary eg. To quantify a dependent variable
Spence: more to one gender than a set of behaviours typical to one gender or other.
Compromise compare scales eg. Using PAQ
