chromatography Flashcards
Column chromatography
Vertical column packed with solid powdered substance - acts as stationary phase
A solvent containing the mixture being analysed is then added and moves down the column as the mobile phase
Varying affinity means they drain out of column at different times - can be taken as separate samples
Retention time is measured - the time it takes to drain out - allow molecules to be identified
Gas chromatography
Thin tubes is packed solid power substance which acts as a stationary phase
A high pressured gas is passed through the tube as a mobile phase
Method used to separate mixtures of volatile liquid which are fed in as vapours
Analysis machine records a retention time for each component molecule in the mixtures - used identify them
GC- MS
Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry
Allows for a more advanced level of molecule analysis
Separated using the gas chromatography
Then Mass spectra identifies them
Much faster and more accurate
