Christianity - Christian Beliefs (pg 1-8) Flashcards
What is the trinity and it’s nature?
- one god, monotheistic religion
- three equal yet distinct person in God; the father, the son, the holy spirit
they are all god but not each other
what does the nice end creed reveal about the nature of the trinity ?
father- powerful creator of everything ‘maker of heaven and earth’
son - Jesus Christ came to earth in human form ( incarnation) ‘for ya and our salvation he came down from heaven’
holy spirit - invisible power of god today ‘the giver of life’
how is the trinity shown in worship and prayer
- blessing themselves by making the sign of the cross
- prayers like Lord’s prayer and Niceness creed
- hymns
why is the trinity important
helps christians understand the three ways god can be understood
Interpretations of creation - difference between creationists and non-literalists
Creationists believe - story in the bible is literally true
God created the world in 6 days
do not accept scientific explanations like evolution or big bang
Non-literalists believe - god created the world but not literally how it is told, it is a metaphor ‘day’
the bible explains why, science explains how
Incarnation, how is jesus important
- Son of god
- prophecy of christ and or saviour
part of the trinity
how was jesus human
born to a human mother ‘normal baby’ (Luke 2:7)
human body
jesus got tired thirsty and hungry
how was god divine
jesus was omnipotent and omniscient forgave sins performed miracles worshiped was resurrected
importance of last days of jesus’ life (passion)
evidence that he’s was son of god
made a sacrifice
life after death
key eccentric leading to jesus’ death
1 last supper 2 betrayal and arrest 3 crucifixion 4 resurrection 5 ascension
what is atonement
the idea that humans are reconciled and forgiven by god
different understandings of atonement
1 jesus death represents gods love for humanity
2 jesus’ death was a sacrifice
3 his death is a victory of good over evil
4 his death represents the price being paid for the forgiveness of humanity
salvation
being saved from sin through the belief on jesus
significance of atonement and salvation today
- restore relationship between god and humanity
- confirm belief in all-powerful and loving god
- gives humans hope they can follow the examples of jesus
christian teaching about heaven
mentioned in the bible yet rarely described. some christians believe it is a physical place, but most think it’s a spiritual place. no suffering or sin in heaven
teachings about resurrection
resurrection of jesus proves kid after death exists
what is the divergent christian understanding of life after death
some think hella don heaven are a physical place, some think spiritual place
everyone has a place on the ‘kingdom of god’
two types of evil and suffering
Moral Evil/Suffering - actions carried out by humans e.g. murder
Natural Evil/Suffering - actions beyond the controls of humans e.g. natural disasters
problem of god being omnipotent/omniscient/ omnibenevolent when taking about evil and suffering
omnipotent - if god is all powerful he would be able to remove all suffering
omnibenevolent - all loving he would remove evil as he cares for his creation
omniscient - all knowing he would know how to remove all evil
what does the bible say about evil and suffering
genesis says god created a perfect world
believe god sent jesus to everyone all evil
it is a test from god
why does god allow people o suffer
Boom of Psalms - offers reassurance that evil and suffering have place in the world. give people the opportunity to follow the example of jesus
Free will - god gave people free will and christians recognise sometime people choose to turn away from god, explains moral evil
