Greek Orthodox

  • Take shoes of before going into the Church
  • The Great Litany asks for blessings on the Church and the world. Believers ask the saints to offer their prayers to God - this is called the intercession of the saints.
  • Musical instruments aren’t used
  • Singing and chanting
  • Incense is burned to represent prayers rising to God in heaven
  • Male and females are separated
  • A screen with icons of Jesus and the saints separates the congregation from the sanctuary where the altar is, symbolising the division between heaven and earth.
  • Only priests, who lead the services, are allowed in the sanctuary.
