worship
showing adoration and reverence; offering praise to God
Liturgical Worship
A church service which follows a set structure or ritual.
Non-Liturgical Worship
A church service that does not follow a set text or ritual; sometimes spontaneous or charismatic
Private Worship
A believer giving God praise and worship on their own
Orthodox
A denomination/tradition of the Church popular in some parts of Eastern Europe(Greek and Russian)
Protestant
Christian denomination in which authority is generally based on the Bible; rather than Church tradition/teaching(eg. Church of England)
Catholic
the tradition within the Christian Church which is led by the Pope; also called the Roman Catholic Church
Charismatic
led by the ‘spirit’ , may involve dancing, clapping, calling out and speaking in tongues
Congregation
A group of people assembled for Religious Worship
prayer
communicating with God through words of praise, thanksgiving, confession or requests for help and guidance; listening to and speaking with God
set prayer
prayers written throughout the centuries which many Christians worldwide use (eg. The Lord’s Prayer)
informal/private prayer
Prayers spoken from the heart which are personal
Grace
A prayer of thanks said before a meal
Sacrament
A religious ceremony or ritual thought to give grace from God, such as baptism, the Eucharist
Baptism
The Christian Religious rite that allows people to become members of the Church. Water is used to symbolise the washing away of sin
Believers Baptism
When baptism happens once the person is old enough to understand the commitment they are making
Infant Baptism
When babies and very young children are baptised, the decision is made by their parent/guardian.
Eucharist/Holy Communion
a sacrament in which the death and resurrection of Jesus, using bread and wine
last supper
the final meal that Jesus shared with his apostles before his crucifixion
paschal candle
A large candle that has been blessed. it represents the light of Jesus and is lit during baptisms and holy week
immersion
in baptisms this is when a person is submerged in water
transubstantiation
when the bread and wine is believed to become the body and blood of Jesus during the Eucharist
consecrated
something that has been made holy/sacred
advent
the period leading up to Christmas when Christians prepare to remember Jesus’ birth
Epiphany
this celebrates the arrival of the wise men to see Jesus after his birth. celebrated on Jan 6th
midnight mass
a traditional church service on Christmas Eve, containing the Eucharist
lent
the six week period up to Easter Sunday. A time to preparation and reflection, traditionally Christians will give something up during this time
Holy week
the final week of lent, starting with Palm Sunday and ending with Easter Sunday. Each day has traditions to remember the events leading up to Jesus’ resurrection
Good Friday
The day that remembers Jesus’ crucifixion . Traditionally a day of fasting and repenting sin
Easter Sunday
A day to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, the most important festival in the Christian calendar
Pentecost
This remembers when the Holy Spirit came to earth following Jesus’ ascension (50 days after Easter Sunday)
Pilgrimage
A religious journey to a holy site/sacred place, it is an act of worship and devotion
Iona
A place of pilgrimage founded by St Columbia in the fourth century. It s in Scotland and it is thought to be a place where God reveals their presence
Lourdes
A place of pilgrimage where the virgin Mary appeared to St Bernadette in a series of visions and it is claimed that miraculous healings have taken place.
Miracle
an extraordinary event that cannot be explained by science so it is thought to have come from God.
evangelism
telling people about God and Jesus with the hope that they will become Christians
mission
The duty of Christians to spread the word of the Gospels(good news about Jesus)
street pastor
A Christian organisation involving people working on city streets giving care to those who need it
Christian Aid
A Christian charity that provides emergency and long-term aid to the developing world. Their mission statement includes ‘we believe in life before death’.
reconciliation
making up and building relationships between two groups/sides after disagreement
persecution
facing hostility and ill treatment; some Christians face punishment and death for practising their faith.
agape
the universal love for all people

A course designed to allow people to explore the big question about life and learn about the Christian faith
The Corymeela Community
a community seeking to promote harmony and reconciliation. It aims to allow people to discuss and overcome their differences
The Great Commission
Jesus’ commandment to his disciples that they must share the Christian message
