Chpter 15.1 mendelian Inheritance has its physical basis in the behavior of chromosomes Flashcards
Mendel’s term for gene
hereditary factors
THE CHROMOSOME THEORY OF INHERITANCE
According to this theory Mendelian genes have specific loci ( positions) along chromosomes , and it is the chromosomes that undergo segregation and independent assortment.
. a specific gene is carried on a specific chromosome e.g. eyecolor gene on the x chromosome.
THE LAW OF SEGREGATION
The 2 alleles for each gene separate during gamete formation ( Homologous pair)
THE LAW OF INDEPENDENT ASSORTMENT
Alleles of genes on honhomologous chromosomes assort independently during gamete formation
WILD TYPE
The phenotype for a character most commonly observed in natural populations
MUTANT
Opposite of wild type:
What 3 processes of chromosomes lead to genetic variation
.independent orientation of chromosomes in meiosis
.crossing over of chromosomes in meiosis
.random fertilization
