human resource department (HR).
This department is responsible for hiring, training, compensation, benefits, performance evaluations, complaints, promotions, and changes in your work status.
employee orientation.
This is the time when the company’s purpose, structure, major policies, procedures, benefits, and other important matters will be explained.
A mentor
is someone who can assist you in developing leadership skills, provide support, expand your professional network, and help you grow in your career. Mentors also provide you the opportunity to improve job skills and increase your potential for career advancement. A mentor will help you understand the culture of the company.
corporate culture
includes the values, expectations, and behaviors of people at work. By understanding a company’s corporate culture, you will learn about its politics, its policies, and how coworkers and executives expect you to behave on the job.
employee handbook
outlines an employee’s agreement with the employer regarding work conditions, policies, and benefits.
Employment-at-will
policies do not contractually obligate employees to work for the company for a specified period. This policy applies to any employee who is not hired as a contract employee for a stated period of time.If you are an employee-at-will, you may quit anytime you want. By the same token, your employer may terminate your employment at any time
right to revise,
which is a statement contained in an employee handbook that provides an employer the opportunity to change or revise existing policies.
Full-time employees
work a pre-determined number of hours per week (normally 30 or 40, depending upon the industry) and are eligible for employer benefits. Unless the position is classified as exempt, employees who work more than 40 hours per week are entitled to overtime pay.
Part-time employees
have varied work hours and normally do not qualify for employer benefits.
Temporary employees
are hired for a specified period of time, typically to assist with heavy work periods or to temporarily replace an employee on leave.
The introductory period
(also known as a probation or orientation period), is typically the first one to three months of employment in which employers are provided time to evaluate a new hire’s performance and determine if the new hire should continue as an employee.
job description
outlines who you report to, exempt or non-exempt status (to determine if you are entitled to overtime pay), job duties and responsibilities (i.e., why a company is paying you to come to work), and qualifications and skills needed to perform the job.
performance evaluation
identifies how work performance will be measured.

include coverage for physician and hospital visits.
Vision benefits
include care for your eyes. Some plans pay for eyeglasses only; others pay for contact lenses and/or corrective surgery.
