Ethics
moral standard of right and wrong

important beliefs that guide his or her behavior

integrity
someone consistently behaves in an ethical manner. Strive to display integrity when unethical situations arise.
ethics statement
a formal corporate policy that addresses the issues of ethical behavior and punishment should someone behave inappropriately.
conflict of interest
occurs when you are in a position to influence a decision from which you could benefit directly or indirectly.
confidential
meaning they are private
implied confidentiality
an employee has an obligation to not share information with individuals for whom the business is of no conce
levels of ethical decisions
which are three questions to help you make an ethical decision. Each level contains a question that, if answered “no,” deems the decision unethical.
Power
one’s ability to influence another’s behavior
7 bases of power
legitimate, coercive, reward, connection, charismatic, information, and expert power.
Legitimate power
is the power that is given to you by the company.
coercive power
power that is derived from your formal position. However, coercive power is negative and uses threats and punishment.
reward power
ability to influence someone with something of value
Connection power
using someone else’s legitimate power.
charismatic power
a form of personal power that makes people attracted to you.
information power
based on an individual’s ability to obtain and share information.
expert power
power that is earned by one’s knowledge, experience, or expertise.
politics
obtaining and using power.
reciprocity
when debts and obligations are created for doing something.
workplace diversity
refers to differences among coworkers. These differences include age (generational differences), gender, economic status, physical makeup, intelligence, religion, and sexual orientation, among other things.
protected class
group of individuals who are protected from discrimination based on civil rights legislation.
workplace discrimination
is acting against someone who is a member of a protected class.
race
people having certain physical traits.
culture
different behavior patterns of people.
ethnocentric
an individual believes his or her culture is superior to other cultures.
perception
is one’s understanding or interpretation of reality. If we had a positive previous experience,
stereotyping
making a generalized image of a particular group or situation.
prejuduce
a favorable or unfavorable judgment or opinion based on one’s perception (or understanding) of a group, individual, or situation.
labeling
when we describe an individual or group of individuals based on past actions
diversity statements
statements that remind employees that diversity in the workplace is an asset and to not engage in prejudice and stereotyping.
glass ceilings/glass walls
Glass ceilings and glass walls are invisible barriers that frequently make executive positions (glass ceiling) and certain work areas or work-related places (glass walls) off limits to those in a protected class.
