Chpt 3 The Cell Flashcards
Describe cell membrane
- cell membrane is a skin that surrounds + protects the cell.
- It controls what enters and leaves the cell
Describe cytoplasm
- cytoplasm is a watery substance containing dissolved substances ie. proteins + sugars.
- Its where the chemical reactions neccessary for life take place
Describe the nucleus
- control centre of the cell
- contains DNA
- controls chemicals the cell will make
- involved in how cell divides to make more cells
Describe the cell structure of an animal cell
- cell membrane
- cytoplasm
- nucleus
Describe the structure of a plant cell
- cell wall
- nucleus
- vacuole
- chloroplast
- cell membrane
- cytoplasm
Describe the cell wall
- outside the membrane
- gives shape and support
Describe chloroplasts
-hold chlorophyll -> green colour that plants use to make food
Describe a vacuole
- large in plant cells
- spaces in cytoplasm
- store things + give support

For cell diagrams
By how much does the eyepiece lens magnify?
x10
By how much do the three objective lenses magnify?
- low power x4
- medium power x10
- high power x40
At does the nosepiece do?
Holds the objective lenses
Wha does the coarse focus wheel do?
Rings the object into rough focus
What does the fine focus wheel do?
Brings the object into sharp focus
What does the stage do?
It holds the slide
Look at page 13
For experiment on cells
What is used to see a plant cell more clearly?
Iodine stain
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells with the same function
Give one example of a plant and animal cell
Transport tissue and muscle tissue
What is an organ?
Its many different tissues working together
Give one example of a plant and human organ
The leaf and the heart
What is a system?
A group of organs working together
Give on example of a plant and human system
The shoot system and the circulatory system
What are the differences between plant and animal cells?
Plant: -nucleus Animal cell:-nucleus
- cell wall -no cell wall - cytoplasm -Cytoplasm - cell membrane -membrane - chloroplasts -no chloroplasts - large vacuole -no large vacuole
