Power
Ability to get other people to do what you want them to do
Politics
Concerned with the distribution of power and resources in society
Authority
Power that citizens view as legitimate, right
Legitimacy
Accepted as right, agreed upon
Government
Organization for exercising authority over a body of people
Economics
Concerned with production and distribution of society’s wealth
Capitalism
- All means used to produce material resources are privately owned
- Individuals decide on production and distribution
Regulated capitalism
- Maintains capitalist economy, individual freedom from government interference
- Allows government to regulate economy to guarantee procedural rights
Socialist economy
- Economic decisions made by politicians
- Base on judgment of what society needs
Social democracy
- Values of equality promoted by socialism can be brought about by democratic reform
- Attempt to fulfill substantive guarantees and procedural guarantees of fair rules
Monarchy
Vests ultimate power in one person, believe God or some other high power has designated they person as a divine representative of earth
Theocracy
God/deity speaks through voice of earthly appointee such as pope or prophet
Oligarchy
Sovereignty grounded in a party or group
Fascism
State is sovereign, run by dictator for glory of the state
Totalitarian
-Authoritarian government with a socialist economy
