chps 1 + 2 test Flashcards
chemistry
the study of the composition and structure of matter and the changes they undergo
scientific discoveries are discovered by blank
accident or through the scientific method
scientific method
observe- collecting data, experimenting, communicating
theory- theories are always tested
test- test and theories can go back and forth, sometimes you have to go back to observe and get more/new data
metric system
length- meter mass- gram volume- liter. m3, 1 cm3 = 1 ml temperature- °C (celsius time- seconds
accuracy vs precision
accuracy- refers to closeness to the accepted value (correct answer)
precision- refers to agreement among values, refers to the sensitivity of a measuring device
density
a measure of how tightly packed the particles of a sample are
percent error goal
<5% error
chemical change
any process that results in a new substance with different properties
reactant—>product
reactant
the substance that enters into a chemical reaction
product
the substance formed by the chemical reaction. products have different properties than reactants
physical vs chemical change
physical change is where a substance’s (or material’s) form can change but the properties it is made up of will not. chemical change is where a substance’s properties it is made up of change (the form of the substance can also change)
indicators of chemical change
- unexpected color change
- a gas is released
- energy is released or observed
- formation of a precipitate
formation of a precipitate
mix two liquids and get a solid
exothermic reaction
- release energy
- feel hot
endothermic reaction
- absorb energy
- feel cold
