What is a refrain in secular music?
A recurring phrase or verse with music. Most songs of the troubadours included this and most of these songs are strophic.
What was a bard in the Middle Ages?
Poet singers that would accompany themselves on harp or fiddle at banquets or other occasions in Celtic lands.

A type of Latin sacred song- it is religious, but not really in churches. Newly composed melody not based off of chant!

What was a jongleur in the middle ages?
Traveling performer and juggler that would make a living by singing songs, playing many instruments, telling stories, or performing live tricks. Very low class!
What was a minstrel in the middle ages?
Upper class specialized musicians and entertainers who were employed in a court or city.
What was a troubadour and a trouvere in the Middle Ages?
Poet composers in southern France who wrote about love mostly about other mens’ wives. Highly literate people and much higher class employed by the court.
What is a Goliard and the Goliard Song?
Musicians educated in the monastery system. They made fun of church ways and sung about other earthly pleasures- love, eating, drinking, etc.
What is a rondeau?
A dance song with a refrain in two phrases whose name is also used for the verse.
What is a minnesinger and minnelieder?
Knightly poet-musicians who wrote German love songs with emphasis on faithfulness, duty, and service that reflected loyalty to their king.
