Who were the two famous composers that came after Du Fay?
Jean de Ockeghem- known for his masses but wrote chansons and motets too (texted upper voices sacred or secular)
Antoine Busnoys- known for his chansons (polyphonic French secular poem)
What is the difference between Du Fay’s Masses and Ockeghem and Busnoys Masses?
They both cover a wider range with the voices than Du Fay’s Masses which creates fuller darker pieces.
What is a canon during this time? And what techniques did a composer use to diversify these canons?
Deriving two or more voices from a single notated voice. He could use inversion (moving by the same intervals but in the opposite direction), or retrograde (backwards).
What is a mensuration canon?
A type of canon where the voices move at different speeds by using different mensuration (meter) signs.

What was Jacob Obrecht famous for?
Jacob Obrecht- masses, chansons, motets, and instrumental pieces- uses imitation a lot in masses: point of imitation- three voices enter at two measures intervals then go into a free form
What was Henricus Isaac famous for?
Henricus Isaac- masses motets, and a huge volume of works (Choralis Canstantinus) for the Proper, and chansonlike works for instrumentalists, and the German Lieder (four part settings of popular songs- clear and sweet harmony)
What was Josquin des Prez famous for?
The greatest composer of his time- mostly known for his motets (freely composed works), but also wrote masses and chansons. Widely desired composer and demanded a high salary! Was the first known composer to try to convey the emotions of the text through music.
What is text depiction?
What Josquin is most famous for- using musical gestures to reinforce the images in the text. Also can be hand in hand with text expression!
What is an imitation mass?
A style of mass invented by Josquin- a mass that imitates a polyphonic work.
What is a paraphrase mass?
A type of mass invented by Josquin- phrases from a plainchant hymn monophonic that are adapted as motives that are treated in points of imitation. Resembles an imitation mass.
