Q

A02- What are the key differences between functionalists and the new right?

A

1) The new right believes that the current education system is not achieving the goals it should.
2) the reason for this failure of the ES is that it’s rune by the STATE.

In state education systems:
-Politicians use the power of the state to impose their views of the type of schools we should have.

This creates uniformity and disregards local needs.

The end results is lower standards of achievement for pupils and a less qualified workforce ( a less prosperous work force)

A02- what sociologists help illustrate the New Right perspective?

A

CHUBB AND MOE (1990) illustrate the new right perspective by claiming that the American state ES had failed to the following reasons: Explain

1) State education has failed to CREATE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES.

(Individuals from the lower classes/ethnic minorities have been poorly served by state education)

2)State education is inefficient as it fails to equip students with the skills needed by the economy.

(Privates schools achieve higher levels of achievements as they are answerable to parents (paying costumers) .

Q

What did CHUBB AND MOE CONCLUDE THAT AFTER THEIR FININGS?

A

The introduction of a market system that places control in the hands of consumers, parents and local communities.

Would ensure that education meets the needs of individuals and wider society.

The state should provide Framework for schools where they have to compete ( Ofsted inspections/league tables) so parents are provided with enough info to make an informed choice.

A03(evaluation of the NR).

List 1 argument that would challenge the new rights view?

A

Traditional Marxists would challenge the new right view that education socialises individuals into a single shared culture

A03(evaluation of the NR).

List a 2nd argument that would challenge the new rights view?

A

The NR present two contradictory points

arguing on the one hand that parents should have more control

but on the other the state should impose a compulsory national curriculum.

These two suggestions aren’t compatible ideas.
